Volunteer Opportunties
South Portland Historical Society offers its museum, and other programs and services, thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers. We are very proud of our volunteers and the good work that they do in our community! If you like what we do and would like to consider volunteering for the historical society in some way, please contact us at 767-7299 or sphistory04106@gmail.com. Some of our volunteers help out for a three-hour shift each week, others help out once a year at a special event. No matter how much or little time you have available to volunteer, we could use your help! Here is a sampling of volunteer opportunities at our historical society:

Our docents are a special group of trained volunteers who give museum tours and interpret our exhibits for visitors. If you like talking and sharing information with people, if you enjoy learning, and if you have an appreciation for local, American and/or maritime history, that’s the best start to becoming a great museum docent. We will provide all the training you would need to become an excellent docent at our museum. You will meet people from all over the world who come to Maine and visit local museums, as well as people from South Portland and Greater Portland who have an appreciation for local history.
The gift shop at our museum is an important source of funding. We know that offering free admission to the museum is the best way to encourage people to come through our doors and learn about our community’s history, and the gift shop helps us to do that. Like our museum docents, our shopkeepers also get a chance to meet and talk with people from all over the world. Our shopkeepers also accept donations of artifacts/materials on behalf of the historical society, answer questions from visitors and callers, and other activities. No prior experience is necessary; we will provide training.
We offer additional walking tours of the local area and give cemetery tours. Please let us know if you have an interest in giving walking tours.
